NORA HEYSEN Nora Heysen: Light and Life
In this first exhibition of Nora Heysen’s work since her death her key subjects – the figure, portraiture and still-life – are shown in depth, with over forty-five works representing a career covering over six decades.
The exhibition has now finished its tour after successful showing at Carrick Hill in Adelaide, Geelong gallery, Ervin Gallery in Sydney and NERAM in Armidale.
The daughter of Hans Heysen, Nora was the only one of the Heysen children to become an artist. At The Cedars, the family’s home near Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, Nora’s first practice was influenced by her father’s, and her lesser-known, early landscapes bear an uncanny resemblance to his.
Nora Heysen: Light and Life is a balanced presentation that allows for re-assessment of an important artist’s career. Key works from major public collections throughout Australia, many considered important enough to form part of the permanent displays of the galleries to which they belong, are being willingly lent to this exhibition.
It is a spectacular exhibition and attracted strong attendances during its time at the Geelong Gallery and the S H Ervin Gallery and NERAM in Armidale.
